The Intelligence Taxonomy: AI, AGI, ASI, and ACI

To understand ACI, we must decouple the measurement of Cognitive Depth from Systemic Architecture.

The traditional AI roadmap (AI → AGI → ASI) measures only cognitive depth. It assumes that increasing the IQ of a single model solves all problems. This is structurally false.

1. AI (Artificial Narrow Intelligence)

  • Definition: The computational automation of specific, bounded tasks (e.g., facial recognition, protein folding).
  • Architecture: Stateless, singular.
  • Limitation: Fails completely outside its training distribution.

2. AGI (Artificial General Intelligence)

  • Definition: A single cognitive node capable of executing any intellectual task a human can.
  • Architecture: General-purpose, singular.
  • Limitation: Lacks persistent environmental state. If you wipe its context window, it loses all continuity. It is an oracle, not an institution.

3. ASI (Artificial Superintelligence)

  • Definition: A single cognitive node whose capability vastly exceeds human bounds in all domains.
  • Architecture: Hyper-capable, singular.
  • Limitation: A single point of failure. An ASI without governance, multi-agent error correction, or a persistent world model is an untethered god in a box. It cannot inherently execute long-term physical logistics without human-designed infrastructure.

4. ACI (Artificial Civilization Intelligence)

  • Definition: The distributed, governed architecture required to manage planetary-scale intelligence.
  • Architecture: Multi-nodal, stateful, persistent, governed.
  • Advantage: ACI subsumes AI, AGI, and ASI. An ACI can plug a superintelligent ASI into its NEXUS fabric as a compute node.

The Ultimate Distinction

ASI answers the question: "What is the most intelligent single entity possible?" ACI answers the question: "How do you safely operate a planetary civilization using intelligence?"

Humanity did not conquer the planet because a single human achieved a 10,000 IQ. We conquered the planet through language, institutions, shared world-models, science, and governance. Civilization itself is the ultimate intelligence algorithm.

ACI is the digital embodiment of that algorithm.
