11 Research, Testing & Cyber Range (FORGE)¶
1. Purpose¶
FORGE is the adversarial testing ground and academic research arm of ORION. A system designed to save lives cannot be validated exclusively in a staging environment. It must be actively attacked, mathematically benchmarked, and scientifically scrutinized.
2. Scope¶
Included: The Cyber Range (attack simulation), chaos engineering experiments, performance benchmarks, and the academic publication roadmap. Excluded: Standard QA testing (unit/integration tests), which are handled in CI/CD.
3. Major Components¶
- The Cyber Range: A fully functional, isolated clone of the ORION mesh used for Red Teaming.
- The Experiment Engine: Tooling to inject controlled failures (e.g., specific packet loss rates) to measure system degradation.
- Benchmark Suite: The immutable performance thresholds ORION must pass to enter production.
4. Architecture¶
FORGE operates parallel to production. It heavily utilizes MIRROR (Digital Twin) to generate realistic telemetry and civilian SOS loads to test the infrastructure to its breaking point.
5. Responsibilities¶
To discover catastrophic failures in a simulation before they occur during a real-world emergency.
6. Relationships with other ORION parts¶
FORGE constantly attacks VEIL (Security) and AEGIS (Comms). It uses MIRROR (Simulation) to generate its attack vectors.
7. Future Roadmap¶
Automated Adversarial AI. Deploying an AI agent whose sole purpose is to invent novel ways to break the ORION mesh, forcing the defensive architecture to evolve dynamically.
8. Trade-offs¶
Maintaining a 1:1 scale Cyber Range is expensive. We trade high compute costs for absolute operational certainty.
9. Risks¶
Testing Bias. If the Cyber Range only tests failures we already know about, it will fail to predict black-swan events.
10. Research Questions¶
Can an automated Red Team AI discover zero-day logic flaws in our OPA Rego policies faster than human security engineers?
11. Security Considerations¶
The Cyber Range contains live exploits and attack scripts. It must be completely air-gapped from the production ORION deployment.
12. Current Status¶
Phase 0: Testing methodologies and strict latency/resilience benchmarks have been codified.
